NATIONAL IDENTITY FRAUD PREVENTION WEEK: IT GOVERNANCE PROMOTES ONLINE SECURITY AT HOME AND IN THE OFFICE

13/10/2009

Ely, England, 13 October, 2009IT Governance, the one-stop shop for compliance expertise, is taking a lead in National Identity Fraud Prevention Week by launching an online resource for small businesses, or individuals, seeking to strengthen their IT security.

Organisations across the UK are, this week, urging businesses and consumers to take action now to protect themselves against ID fraud.

IT Governance is unveiling a web page, called ‘Keep Safe Online’, packed with information to help people stand firm against attempted breaches of online security, such as phishing attacks on webmail services. The page not only provides links to free online resources, created by organisations from banks to the UK government, but also provides warning stories of what can happen when security attacks succeed. Furthermore, visitors can sign up for a free 10-step guide to online security that will dramatically reduce the likelihood of a business, or home network, falling victim to hackers, phishing attacks and viruses.

Alan Calder, Chief Executive of IT Governance, says: “National Identity Fraud Prevention Week is a great initiative which we are eager to support. In fact, our ‘Keep Safe Online’ resource goes far beyond identity theft, and covers all aspects of online security for individuals and small businesses.

“Breaches of domestic online security can be far more distressing for individuals than corporate attacks. We want to make sure that good IT security is part of everybody’s lives all the time – at home and in the office. There is a direct correlation between the level of security that people have at home and the level of security that they have at work. When organisations implement IT security awareness programmes, their staff often take the information on board and improve their information security at home too. We want to make that process as easy as possible.

“Domestic online security can often be forgotten in the rush toward other priorities. Nonetheless, it doesn’t take a lot of time or money to be secure, as long as a few basic rules are implemented and maintained.”

Calder jokes: “Every week seems like National Identity Fraud Week, so it’s about time we spent at least a week trying to stop it!”
