Experts urge increased adoption of Cyber Essentials to protect against basic cyber attacks

26/05/2015

IT Governance, the leading cyber security services provider and CREST-accredited certification body for the UK Government’s Cyber Essentials scheme, is urging UK businesses to protect themselves against basic cyber attacks by adopting the Cyber Essentials scheme, which mandates the implementation of five critical controls.

Alan Calder, founder and executive chairman of IT Governance, says, “The increase of automated cyber attacks means that every company can become a victim. For cyber criminals, the size of an organisation doesn’t matter.

“Making sure you are patching your systems, managing user access control effectively and getting the basics of cyber hygiene right is critical for achieving a minimum level of security. This is what the Cyber Essentials scheme is about.

“Moreover, for as little as £300, organisations can certify to Cyber Essentials, provided they pass the necessary scans, to prove to themselves and their clients that the required controls have been implemented.”

In order to achieve Cyber Essentials certification, companies need to complete a self-assessment questionnaire, which is signed off by a senior company representative and then verified by an external certification body. An external vulnerability scan will also be required if the company has chosen to be certified through a CREST-approved certification body like IT Governance.

The UK Government requires organisations to prove their compliance with the scheme in order to bid for government contracts that involve the handling of sensitive and personal information, and the provision of certain technical products and services.

IT Governance’s Cyber Essentials Certification service is designed for organisations that do not require help completing the self-assessment questionnaire and is available as a convenient online service, saving time and money.

The IT Governance Cyber Essentials Certification service can be booked online at www.itgovernance.co.uk/shop/p-1622.aspx.
