ISO50001 (ISO 50001) Energy Management Systems - Requirements

ISO50001 Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (EMS) to enable an organisation to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.

The Standard specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including:

• Measurement
• Documentation and reporting
• Design and procurement practices for equipment
• Systems
• Processes and personnel that contribute to energy performance.

ISO50001:2011 has been designed to be used independently, but can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.

ISO50001:2011 is applicable to any organisation wishing to demonstrate conformance to its stated energy policy. Such conformance is confirmed either by means of self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformance, or by certification of the EMS by an external organisation.

The standard is intended to:

• Assist organisations in making better use of their existing energy-consuming assets.
• Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources.
• Promote energy management best practices and reinforce good energy management behaviours.
• Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritising the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies.
• Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain.
• Facilitate energy management improvements for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects.
• Allow integration with other organisational management systems such as environmental, and health and safety.
