Description

ISO19770-1 establishes a structured baseline for organisations to implement an integrated set of processes for software asset management (SAM), which are divided into tiers to allow for incremental implementation, assessment and recognition.

SAM is 'the business practice of managing and optimising the purchase, installation, utilisation, maintenance, and replacement of all software assets within an organisation. Organisations adopt SAM for several reasons, including avoiding legal problems, saving money and time, and reducing security risks.' (BSA definition)

The aim of the standard is to help you achieve good practice and manage your software more efficiently so that management and other organisations can be confident of the quality and adequacy of your processes. ISO/IEC 19770-1:2012 can be applied to all software and related assets, regardless of their nature. It can be applied to executable software such as application programs, operating systems and utility programs, and to non-executable software such as fonts, graphics, audio and video recordings, templates, dictionaries, documents and data. It can also be applied to all technological environments and computing platforms such as virtualised software applications, on-premises or software-as-a-service, and is equally relevant in Cloud computing as it is in older computing environments.

What's new in ISO/IEC 19770-1:2012?

In ISO/IEC 19770-1:2012, four tiers have been added to the SAM processes, which enable you to take a more incremental approach, allowing you to improve the effectiveness of the SAM in your organisation.

Most of the processes and desired outcomes of each process are the same as they were in the 2006 version of the Standard.

Protect your organisation against software piracy

Use ISO/IEC 19770-1:2012 to protect your organisation from the costs and reputational damage of being accused of software piracy. Software piracy is 'the unauthorised copying or distribution of copyrighted software. This can be done by copying, downloading, sharing, selling, or installing multiple copies onto personal or work computers. What a lot of people don't realise or don't think about is that when you purchase software, you are actually purchasing a licence to use it, not the actual software. It is that licence that tells you how many times you can install the software, so it's important to read it. If you make more copies of the software than the licence permits, you are pirating.' (BSA guidance)

Please note: We will supply either the British Standard or international adoptions of ISO/IEC 19770-1, all of which contain exactly the same content.
